Kyempene Village

Summary:

This January, we implemented a safe water system at Life Schools in Kyempene Village, Uganda. The water system provides up to 23,000 litres of safe, clean water a day, providing abundant water for both the school and the surrounding community.

Impact:

The Life Schools were founded in 2012 by Paul Natuhumuriza, who was born and raised in Kyempene. The school's student body numbers 900 students and counting; they expect to serve around 1,500 young people from Kyempene and the surrounding areas.

Before the project's implementation, many children in Kyempene shouldered the burden of collecting water for their families. This task kept them away from home for a long time, keeping them out of school and leaving them vulnerable to harassment and assault.

With a safe water source, the schools can provide their growing student population with water throughout the day. Students will also be able to circumvent the need to collect water for their families from unprotected sources outside the community, allowing them to attend school regularly and get ahead in their education.
