Kawolo Hospital Maternity Ward
Summary:
25,000 litre rainwater, solar powered purification, safe water system. This was the first hospital in Uganda to have purified water. H2O 4 ALL installed the first solar-powered flush rainwater collection system combined with water purification in Uganda for the Kawolo Hospital, which handles 350 outpatient cases every day. The hospital serves Buikwe, Mukono, Kayunga and Buvuma districts of Uganda.
Impact:
Thanks to the new safe water system, staff at Kawolo were able to maintain proper sanitation and provide safer medical care to new mothers and babies. Within three months of the project's completion, sepsis rates in the maternity ward dropped from 8.6% to 2.8%, and maternal mortality became almost nonexistent in the hospital.
